Frustrated, I decided because they were the only change in my running routine the blame lie with my shoes and I threw them away as soon as I got home from the doctor. It was December and I finished my first ever 8 mile run and felt pretty damn proud of myself, visions of a finisher's medal appearing in my head. Until the next morning and I wake up to stinging pain in my right hip. It’s a rest day, i.e. a day I don’t run, so I limp around hoping it will go away before my next run day. Run day comes, pain is still there but I decide to “run through it”. I make it about half a mile before admitting it’s not going away that easily. I take a week off, try to run and the pain returns. I’m out of time for training for the February half-marathon and try not to get discouraged when I realize I won’t be able to run it. (And I’ve wasted 60 bucks!!!) I decide to learn from this and resolve to come back stronger and smarter. I take myself off the road for a month to give myself time to heal. I also buy myself a new pair of New Balance shoes for Christmas to give me something to look forward to!

One of the great things about GeezersGamers.com is that it gathers together gamers who break the common stereotypes of gamers: male, young, no life, no mate, living in parent’s basement, never goes outside and is unfit. Like most of you who visit this site, very few of those labels describe me, a gamer for 30+ years. (Sorry kids, it was in my generation in which video gaming for the masses was born). I’m definitely male but at 44 I can’t be described as young and with a wife, 4 children and a steady job those “no life” and “no mate” labels certainly don’t stick. I last lived with my parents about 10 years ago when I changed jobs to move back to where most of our family lives and I needed a place to stay for a few weeks while I settled everything ahead of my family joining me. I generally like going outside, except when temperatures are ridiculously high like they have been recently (100+). That just leaves “unfit”. Yeah, well....
