It's been a year since the Bungie article swelled our ranks on the site. One of the early and continuously active clans to form shortly after that was BTB. Happy B'day folks. Here's a short spotlight.
>Shamus Whistler: To your recollection how did BTB get its start? Prosecutor66: Someone knocked over a can of whoopass in the barn out back and a few of the dumber animals got into it. so_wut: It all began with your typical non-matchmaking rooms. I was tired of the inconsistency of the other fifteen members. It was time to find a group that would work together and enjoy the same game types that I did. I went back to
GeezerGamers.com and put up a request for GGBTB. I started recruiting in the forums.
Doc Sonic was the first geezer I had gamed with and he had a way with words. It took a little bit to get used to Doc, but we clicked and started building the clan you see now.
SW: How did you come to join BTB? Prosecutor66: Got a Live Account for Christmas. Played two miserable nights in rumble pit and swore never to go back. Found
GeezerGamers through the
Bungie site the next day. I noticed one of the founders was also a prosecutor so I contacted him (Reaper1). Meeting him got me hooked on the site then BTB saved me from a fruitful and productive real life. Yarnspinner: Well, I had not played any video games on LIVE until early December when my wife,
Bearur, signed up on one of the 2-month trial memberships. Watching her play caused me to sign up on another one of the trial memberships we had and we spent a lot of time playing online through the holidays…mostly in matchmaking and enjoying it to some extent but not enough to keep going after the trial-membership ran out. Some time just before Christmas,
Bear found Geezer Gamers and pointed me in that direction. I got some Geezers on my FL and played a lot of custom games over the next few weeks, but really wanted to get into more of the standard games. A quick inquiry on the forum, lead me and Bear to GGBTB where we met
so_wut,Doc Sonic, salinereg (now ASaltyMongoose),
SPARTYS, and Wasted Hope. The rest, as they say, is history. SW: What makes BTB special? scubaman: We communicate with each other and treat everyone like family. If problems arise, we take care of them together and discuss it. We have also kept our group small. I believe a smaller group keeps you closer and doesn’t give a lot of room for too many problems.
so_wut: I think the one thing that makes BTB special is the limited size of our clan. With the size we have it has been more of a family than anything else.
WastedHope: I think there’s an extraordinary amount of respect between our members. Obviously, we
Geezers have real lives and jobs, children and stress. Halo 2 is our way to escape that, so do not add to the stress. If we have a problem concerning
Halo-related issues, we can come to one another and have open communication, which is so much easier compared to real world issues with the boss, with work in general, etc. I also think it’s good that we can have a sense of humor about things, it’s just a game! We all forget that we muted the mic and watched our teammates get ground into ash by someone with a rocket without them hearing us…but how many people outside of the
Geezers will openly admit it? Within the last few seconds in the pregame lobby, before a match game in the geezer arena, someone always has to ask which button will shoot, just to lighten the mood. Yarnspinner: We’re a family. When one of us has a real life problem, the first thing said is “How can we help?” We pull together for fun and challenges (both online and offline). There’s not a person in GGBTB with whom I wouldn’t share if they needed it. SW: What is your fondest memory of BTBs first year? larboz: This is a lay-up... my son Xander was born on Valentines day and when I got home, I see the following PM in my mailbox "Geezer Gamers BTB is pleased to let you know we have sent You and your Wife an Amazon.com Gift Certificate for Xander in the amount of $(a good amount!). Prosecutor66: Not sure I could do justice by naming just one but if you put a gun to my head I’d have to say riding in a hog with
Scubafreak for the umpteenth time knowing that every time we get together in that thing we die a spectacular death. so_wut: An extreme Rocket Launcher betrayal that Salty pulled the trigger on and did not live it down for many months.
Doc had a few choice words during the match as well.
SW: What is the funniest thing that has happened in BTB? Bearur: The night that McGuffin and Silvermug got wasted while playing a Matchmaking BTB in Coagulation. We were on defense and they were popping up and down shooting at each other and laughing their heads off. I just sat there laughing at them. It was very hard to kill people with the tears streaming down my face. larboz: So we are playing assault or CTF on headlong 1 night and we hear the squeaky voice "THEY ARE RUNNING 27!!" so
Spartys speaks up.. "RUN PLAN SPOCK!". Ok the reason that this is funny is because there is not, never was, a plan Spock but one of them had made a "Beam me up Scotty" so the rest of the game was "Run Kirk plan!!!" "HOORAY I Jacked the
Enterprise!!!" The other team started cracking up also. WastedHope: I still crack up when I think about a time before all the
Geezer clans became organized enough to play against one another. Spartys and I were guarding our base in Coagulation, because that’s pretty much what you did those days. There was no strategy, no team, there was only a draw between two mediocre defending teams. Meanwhile, the rest of our team in big team battle was going fruitlessly out into the field. He and I were having our own conversation in the base. At one point, I asked him what song I should sing, because we had nothing better to do. Some kid says, “Sing ‘How We Do’.” So in my best R&B voice I started singing Montel Jordan’s “This is How We Do It”.
Spartys is backing me up with the beat and we’re groovin’. The kid stops us, “No, not THAT song, I mean the 50 cent song,” and plays it on his iPod for the listening “enjoyment” of us all. We were having a good time, and realized just how much younger everyone else we were matchmaking with were
SW: Tell me about the best game you have played with BTB? (Whether it was in MM, a custom game or clan battle – that game where everything went right and the teamwork was awesome) larboz: I have to say that the best game was a clan match against NE. Everyone knows that they are slayers through and through. And let’s be honest, they are REAL GOOD slayers. Well going into match 5 (Team Slayer) we were tied 2-2 and ended up pulling off a win 50 - 44. When the news of the win reached our teammates they were in our "green room" just screaming.... it was insane. silvermug: Hmm. Lots of great games. One was in a recent GeezerArena match against the
Senior Citizens clan. One of their choices for a game type was Team Crazy KOTH on Beaver Creek. Our overall strategy for the match was to win not only our choices, but their choices as well. So our strategy guru,
Empty Set, did all the homework and figured out all the possible hill areas on that map. Then he played with a timer right next to his console, so he could notify us on team chat 5 seconds before the hill moved. We also practiced being spread out on the map so we could quickly move into a new hill once it popped up. When it came time to execute the game plan, we nailed it. We were outslayed by far (Senior Citizens
have some killer slayers!), but we wound up winning that variant handily. We went on to win the match too. Yarnspinner: Me, Larboz, Nevdesign, and Silvermug ventured into the Hardcore play list for the first time. We drew Crazy King on Midship. I don’t know if it was because we’d just come out of a practice session or just because we have all played so much together, but our communication was excellent and we all played smart. It was a very close game that ended up going to the time limit rather than the hill time goal, but we won by 19 seconds.
SW: Have you had any LAN parties or a time where you all tried to meet and if so what was it like?
scubaman: We have gotten together a couple of times over the past year. One time, we met and went to an amusement park in Charlotte, NC. We had a great time. That night, we stopped at the package store and bought a bit of liquor. I had always had Bacardi 151, but never as a shot. Oh my goodness, my lips were on fire and I was on cloud
9. We then proceeded to play Halo2 and that was a mistake. silvermug: I and Lil’ Mug met up with Charyoutree and
Bearur for a day at King’s Dominion just outside Richmond, Virginia. We drove down (from D.C.), and they drove up for the day, and we all had a blast. I was just nervous about sitting in front of
Bearur on the roller coasters. I was afraid she would melee me in real life. so_wut: We had a lot of fun at the Renaissance Festival in Charlotte, NC. Myself,
Scubafreak, Charyoutree, BearurCapnBlackJack,
Bravadiss and Dive Honey spent the day checking out the events and the rest of the festival.
BlackJack, Char and Bearur dressed up for the occasion.
SW: Is there anything special you would like to say about BTB? Bearur: Just that, not only are they my clan members, a good deal of them have actually become my friends. I have several on my cell phone and we speak regularly. It is great to have such, funny, intelligent and kind people as online gamers and friends. I am honored to call them family. Prosecutor66: Personally, I would like to dedicate this article to S6X GUN serving all of us in the war in Iraq. I hope he has an opportunity to read this wherever he is. Come home to BTB safe and sound, we’ll leave the light on for you. scubaman: I have had one of the best years of my life spending late nights online with my new family. Once you’re in, it’s hard to get out. I enjoy the fun I have whenever I get online. We also play and communicate with other clans. Thanks
GeezerGamers.com for bringing us a great meeting place and to the people of BTB
for such great friendships. silvermug: You guys are the best. so_wut: This is a great group of people to game with. We may not always win, but it is always fun playing with this group. WastedHope: I think we’re a pretty social clan, which lends itself to big team battle, but when most everyone was modding their games, we got out of the habit. That’s when we became the “BS Talkin’ Buddies” to me. Yarnspinner: Thank you, El Conquistador! And thank you to the rest of my clanmates! You all mean the world to me!
