Windows 7 Issue

Just got a new laptop for work. It's got 64-bit Windows 7 on it. Usually, while I eat lunch, I'll watch part of a video on my PC or part of a DVD or part of a Netflix show. Nice way to pass 10-15 minutes.

Well, both times, now, that I've done this on the new laptop, I've been able to watch for about 5-10 minutes, then it freezes up, then blue screens.

Any ideas?

Oh, I can't call the helpdesk, because they're not supporting Windows 7 right now. I'm actually in a beta program.

Which browser were you using? I've heard that Chrome runs well on Windows 7...

That was happening to me on my Dell XPS, turned out to be a bad video card, but I don't suspect that to be the case on a new machine. I also seem to remember Win7 giving me an error report in the notifications too.

That was happening to me on my Dell XPS, turned out to be a bad video card, but I don't suspect that to be the case on a new machine. I also seem to remember Win7 giving me an error report in the notifications too.

We had some brand new HPs come through that had bad motherboards, power supplies and RAM recently, so anything is possible. Because it happens with streaming and DVD, that leads me to think it's video card related.

If you stream off of Hulu or a similar site, assuming you aren't locked down, does it happen there as well?

I was burning some DVDs this past weekend on my laptop and when I went to play back the DVD it didnt want to load. I havent tried lately and I didnt get a error report either. I can play iso files just fine. Ive had this laptop since July 2010 so I havent tried a DVD until this past weekend. Im sure its nothing and Ill check out Chrome and report back.

First things first - check your video and sound drivers.

Second - is it only with a DVD and Netflix, or does it happen on places like YouTube also?

Third - what's the info in the bluescreen giving you as the faulting module (here's a guide to deciphering it: http://answers.oreilly.com/topic/149...reen-of-death/)

Fourth - any events in the Application/System logs?

4 GB ram (had 2 the first time this happened)
