Lux, I get the same feeling a lot of the time.
My fiancee’s parents live across the street from a “photographer”. I went over to visit him last time we were there and it turns out he is a PHOTOGRAPHER. Like, shot for years for a national magazine, photojournalist, etc and is now an art photographer. he sold 3 prints recently for ~16k apiece. it was humbling. But at the same time, I know that I cannot be discouraged by how much better I seem to think other people are... and instead need to be inspired to work harder. Visiting this guy showed me that sometimes developing an overall vision for a project will let me take better photos in the quest to make a creative whole. It also showed me that I -REALLY- would love to have the Epson Stylus Pro 11880 printer(Though, I’d “settle” for a 4900, 7900, or 9900
)
I don't have a great camera. It's a Canon S5 IS. It does ok for me. Plus, I have no idea what to look for in a better camera. I've taken some pics that I thought were pretty decent, until I compare them to a real photographer's photos. Then I'm glad I don't have to make a living from photography.

lux, my first camera after my iphone was that very same canon s5. you can get some surprisingly good shots out of it. if you click on my blog you'll see i have my S5 shots tagged and you can see them. it was my sister's camera which i gave back after getting my d70. if you look at her blog (there's a link on mine (it's just how i see things) you'll see she's 10x better than me.
truly composition is more important than the camera itself.
huck, it says "blog not found". and you're right about composition. but even still, sometimes the lousy quality ruins the whole thing. i bought that canon a while back. i basically walked into best buy and just picked out the most expensive non-professional camera thy had at the time.
what online photo storage do you guys recommend? i don't know tumblr from flickr from any other one. i'd like one that preferably lets you open the picture up to its full resolution and not compress the hell out of it.

I generally only post low res compressed versions of my photos. If someone wants to rip it off, I dont want them making big ole prints of my files... at least with any quality. I like hosting my own images. I get less cool display stuff, but dont have to deal with some silly EULA/ToS on a site like flikr or tumblr.
As for cameras... In terms of technology, the best thing you can do is to get a camera with a big sensor, like a DSLR, the Fuji X100. or the Canon G1X. The Fuji is a beaut. The larger sensor will give you much better low light sensitivity and overall file quality. The glass in the compacts will also be quite a bit better than in the smaller sensor “prosumer” cameras like the G13.
sorry about the broken blog link. forgot to fix it when i changed the name from iphone4tography to my single reflex. works now!
EULA/ToS = me not having an idea what that means. but if someone ripped my stuff off, I'd be happy that someone found it worth ripping it off!
I still don't get the whole dslr mechanic. I know what slr is, but I don't het how it applies to digital cameras or why its even necessary. What I see in my viewfinder is exactly what the lens sees. A mirror isn't necessary.

Here's a link to the S5 pictures on Huck's blog:

Huck, I couldn't find the link to your sister's blog. That picasa / blogger format is hard for me to navigate and I'm not sure all that web 2.0 javascript is working quite right.
Lux, I'll concur with Huck's point. The camera you shoot with is just a tool. The picture that you decide to take is where your creativity and artistry comes in. I bet if we gave your S5 to Warin's fiancee's parents neighbor, he'd get better pictures out of it than any of us.
My view on looking at awesome pictures, way better than what I can take, is that it keeps me engaged. Most of the photos people show aren't super highly technical, leveraging some $10,000 lens or super pro gear.
This picture by Lisa Bettany, for example, was taken with an iphone:
