Tried some star photos tonight...I'm not in a great area because of light pollution. Anyways, I wound up with a nice picture of clouds moving across. :/

And Squidge - I think the 70-300 will be okay

    Nice!

Did you use a tripod on that or free hand?

All freehand...didn't really have room to carry a tripod with me. There's no trunk on Indycars

That's impressively not blurry. What settings did you have that set at?

I really wish there was another option in a comparable price range.

Also, on a newer body, it's much better...it's pretty snappy in medium light on the T4i, and was pretty good when I tried it on my cousin's 60D. In good light, it's very quick. Overall, I think it's still a great bargain for the refurb price @ Adorama. And image quality is great....
Viktor and I caught up yesterday and I tried it out. After fooling around with it for a few minutes, Viktor and I came to the potential conclusion that maybe it is his IS that has worn out with age. I thought it focused fast enough on my 60D for a $400 lens.

I ordered the $299 refurb one from Adorama today.
(I paid the extra $3 for 3 day select which puts it here next Tuesday? Freakin' UPS!)

Nice. As long as you have decent light, those lenses can be excellent.

I am tempted to pick up the Nikon equivalent for more reach when I have lots of light. It isnt quite as sharp as my 70-200 f/2.8 but the extra 100mm of focal length on the full frame body would be really nice, and I dont want to spend 1200 on a 200mm f/4. Scratch that. I do want a 300mm f/4. I cant afford one though!

No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm looking at it like this: while I can see myself owning the 100-400L or the 70-300L, it's going to be a while before I get there (the 24-70 f/2.8L is first on my list). Until then, I need something with more reach.

Playing with my new lens. 40-150mm f/4-5.6 Micro Four Thirds (equivalent to 80-300mm in 35mm)
Shot was taken at full zoom, f5.6, cropped to about 3/4 of the full picture.
The lens doesn't open wider than f5.6 at full length, but fortunately it does allow enough DOF to get the whole squirrel in focus, and a nice blurry view of my neighbor's back yard.

This little bastard's been sneaking into my apartment through the back door that we like to leave open in the summer. He had already stolen 2 ears of corn from our kitchen table over the past few days, and he was attempting to steal a third when I spotted him. He ran down the stairs halfway to the next floor, and I'm pretty sure he was just waiting for me to leave so he could try to sneak back inside for some more corn. I figured it was a perfect opportunity to test out my new lens. This is the only good shot I got, unfortunately. Those buggers are really quick!

That may be the only good shot you got, but damn that's a nice, sharp, crisp image.
