Arugula is an underused spice^h^h^h^h^h vegetable.

My dad back in the "California Flakes" days, would go on an on about gourmet pizza. Gourmet pizza is a great invention! I'm glad "those crazy californians" decided to think outside of the culinary box.

I'm sorry Squidgey, but I can't let this one go ... it causes me pain. Arugula, a.k.a. in other parts of the world as Rocket, is actually a leafy green vegetable, which makes it neither an herb or a spice. Spices are generally plant seeds, roots, bark, that kind of thing and herbs are generally the flowers or leaves.

Sorry to be a prick, but it's akin to referring to a motorcycle as a car.

jane, i got a piece of that metal scrubber in my pasta at Harry Carey's restaurant here in chicago. it was as large as the rigatoni, but well covered in sauce and other pasta. i bit down and cut the roof of my mouth pretty well. they changed out my meal for anything i wanted (don't recall what i got...it was 10 years ago), paid for that meal and gave me a $100 gift card! it probably wouldn't have been as sweet a deal were it not for the blood!

Here's a true scenario from last weeks local news...

At restaurant, lady found a small slug in her salad. Didn't want to finish salad or want it replaced, but ate rest of her meal. Manager comp'd her entree and gave her $50 gift certificate. She got on local media and complained about how she was treated (ie. didn't think she was recompensed enough). Discuss.

If you give them an inch (i.e. $50) they'll take a mile (complain on the public forum of their peers, i.e. local news). Solution: Burn with fire.

I would've creeped out. I was having dinner this weekend at the Met Grill. In my salad there was a copper box staple. I took it out and set it on the table, didn't mention it. As we went to pay they said dinner was on them. They wouldn't take no for an answer.

It's a battle of public opinion. Any sensible consumer will see that they offered her far more than she accepted, and gave her far more than she asked for. PR win for the restaurant, in my opinion. Loss for the woman. Of course, now the whole world knows that the restaurant somehow got a slug in their food. Is it another Wendy's finger incident?
