I was talking to one of my friends at work and he has a buddy that competition shot .45's. He apparently is very fond of EAA's but he has about 6 .45's. I'm going to stock up on some ammo for them and we're going to hit the range in a couple of weeks. Words cannot express my excitement

Can't believe I just found this thread!! First off, congrats on the shopping trip!! Did you end up with the Kimber, or are you still looking? As you've been shopping, I'm sure you've noticed that some of these geezers *cough* Ghost *cough* have WAY too much money to spend on firearms! Being a broke student, I am a much more frugal purchaser of firearms! I've actually been looking at purchasing a new .45 just this week. I have owned dozens of guns (I get bored and sell them), and the last .45 I had was a Para Ordnance. It was a SWEET firearm, but it was LDA (light double action), and I much prefer the single/double combo. Anyway, Para, Ruger and even Taurus all offer .45s that are less than a grand! (not sure what you're looking to spend).

I found a (very lightly) used Taurus .45 (1911 frame), with Crimson trace grips for $550. I just have to sell my Sig P226 (9mm), before I can buy it.

I haven't bought yet. On the 21st is when we're doing all of our firing. As far as spending, I'm looking to stay around 700-800ish. That should get me a quality pistol, but nothing too fancy. I always have to factor in a little more because I fire south pawed.

On a side note, I'm looking at doing some upgrading too:
I currently have a Remington Woodsmaster 30-06 that's older than I am. I'd like to get a Savage Accutrigger Bolt Action lefty 30-06. Anyone have any experience with these? I've heard they're really nice.

I'm also looking to upgrade my Remington 1100 12 gauge to one of the new Remmy Versa Maxes. It maybe overkill, but that's a damn nice shotty and will hunt pretty much everything and anything I can find around here.

All and all I'm trying to talk the wife into letting me spend that $2500. She's ok with the .45, but she's fussing at me about the others. I don't think she fully understands that it's more expensive to buy 3 different shotguns with different chokes for various hunting seasons than it would be to just buy the Versa Max. And the Woodmaster I just don't like. It's a semi, and fires ok. I've replaced the mag but it tends to jam on any 180 grain ammo I put in it. There's not much modding I can do to it without spending a lot of money. My preference is a bolt action because they're WAY more accurate to fire at range and there's pretty much no such thing as misfeeding because of ammo weight like that. I don't like wounding animals because of a wild shot, I like clean kills. And for the record, I'm not made out of money But we've stumbled onto a bit of fortune and these are upgrades I'd really like to do while I can. I figure I'll probably only have one shot to get the guns I want.

I've already compromised on not getting what I *REALLY* want...

Sell a gun once you own it? Blasphemy.... OK, I admit I have sold a couple but not many.

My next purchase will hopefully be one of these:

It's a short barreled 9mm, the bitch is the cost of the stamp ($250) on top of the cost of the gun and the 4 month or so wait for the .gov folks to complete the background check. I may double up and get a suppressor for it so I can do some plinking on our property without scaring the neighbors. The only problem is that a suppressor would be another $250 to the government for a second stamp.

I'm not sure I like 9mm. They're fun for plinking I guess, but so is a 22 for half the cost. I know the army switched to them for a little while, but then went back to 45's for sidearms because they discovered 9mm's don't do so well against moving vehicles. I guess for a spray and pray its ok. I'd rather have something that fires a 7.62mm round or bigger I think.

Of course, I am in Texas. And we do everything bigger here.

For what I'll use it for .22 doesn't fit the bill (of course I do have .22 plinkers as well), I'll run that gun in side matches at the pistol matches I shoot. .22 won't knock the steel poppers used in USPSA/IPSC. I can also still reload 9mm for a semi reasonable price so the cost isn't too bad.

Ghost, a new piece of my soul dies with you every post!! That's a sweeeeeet setup!

As far as ammo goes, 9mm is still pretty cheap plinking ammo. For me 22 just lacks something. It doesn't really feel like you're shooting a real gun, feels more like a pellet gun I think. I haven't shot the savage, but the reviews all seem pretty positive. A few months back I traded in my semi-auto mossberg 935 shotty and picked up a Benelli Supernova. Honestly, every time I shoot it I pee a little! It's just such a sweet weapon, and it came with chokes for all occassions!

Side note: Outside of spec ops, all the services (Army, Marines, Navy, AF) run the Beretta 9mm as their stock sidearm.
