I was almost at the amount needed for a house until I had to get better armor then I had to put that house dream in white run to the side. This game is amazing! I can honestly say I spend more time just looking around the environment then actually doing the quests.
I have so far, only played Skyrim in 1-2 hour chunks of time. I don't think that is the way to play it. I need to lock myself in a dark room and play for half a day or more.

This is my first experience with an Elder Scrolls game. So far I am really enjoying the game. I got up to level 8 over the weekend. I'm playing as a Nord Battlemage. I'm with you guys on the carry-weight issues. I'm trying to save up enough to purchase a house.

For those with questions about buying a house, try this website that gives house prerequisites: http://www.gamefront.com/skyrim-house-buying-guide/

I found my first Dwarven ruin as part of the Whitehall mages quests and all I can say is....wow! Kudos to the developers for a very creative take on Dwarven technology. Quite an evolution from Dwarven tech in Oblivion.

On carry-weight, in Oblivion and into this game I sell nearly everything after every major dungeon dive or cave exploration. I keep certain favorite weapons, armor and potions for a time (until somethign better comes along) but nearly everything else goes to market (I try and find the person who buys and sells in every major location; there are even roving merchants I've run into in the wilderness). I've been making use of enchanting to upgrade my weapons myself (find a nice orc sword and enchant some frost for example) and will even sell these. I keep Lydia updated with the strongest enchanted sword or Axe as well as carrying some few items I don't want to part with.

In this way I almost never exceed my carrying limits, although I have occasionally and reluctantly left some valuable heavy items behind. A secondary benefit is that I always have lots of gold since I sell items frequently. That being said a house would be nice to stash some items. There is a quest to find some particularily heavy items (qty 10) for a person and I'm finding it a challenge to make carry-weight room to pick more than a couple of these items up when I do run into them. It would be nice to stash these as I find them.

I've found that if you happen to lose the first companion you get at Whiterun, go back there to the Jarls castle and she'll be sitting at the table waiting for you.

certian NPC will die. I've lost a couple of them now.

Basic question - but how do your followers equip gear you give? I've given Lydia a helmet and she doesn't equip the thing, but I've read on forums where folks have given her various helms. On the inventory it has "X Give", so I press X, but nothing happens. Same for weapons for her as well. I must be doing something wrong...
