I've tried some games on Hard/Veteran/Insane/whatever, but only for the achievements. Then it occurred to me that I don't really care enough about the cheevos to put myself through the aggravation and shame this entailed, so I just stopped. I usually try out a game on normal or easy, and then ramp it up a bit if it still feels fun. (I don't like games that are too easy, either.)

I respect those that can power through games on their hardest settings and they deserve their achievments, but I'm not one of those folks. My real life is hard enough; I don't want to make my escapist hobby any harder than it needs to be.

normal except for a few select games I'll attempt in hard, Gears series is one I have done all on hardcore alone, or a game I know I can do on hard or beyond.

I play all the games I get on Normal for the first run through.

Then, if the game interested me enough, or I want to go achievement whoring, I will take on a "Veteran", "Legendary", or whatever other name they come up with for the hardest difficulty possible.

But, on the flip side, the only one I've finished was Modern Warfare 2, so far.
I've gone pretty far on Halo: ODST, and plan on finishing that, but the games by Treyarch like COD: World at War and Black Ops, I've tried, but the idiotic endless waves of bad guys is just entirely too damn frustrating to me.

Now, I admit, I tried, once, Halo 3 on Legendary, and tried it with a couple skulls on, for whichever that achievement was, and that was just pure hell. I will probably return to that someday, but I need to develop a more zenlike mindset for that, for my cat's sake!

I've been thoroughly enjoying Halo CE Anniversary on Normal, and will probably give that a try on Legendary, because there have been a few moments where I felt like it was almost too easy, on Normal.

One game, I truly felt Normal was difficult enough, and when I tried it on the hardest difficulty, I was just hating life was Arkham Asylum.
I admit more of a recreational attitude to video gaming, so there are times where I die repeatedly, even on Normal (the Favela level on Modern Warfare 2 comes to mind), so when they come across that difficult, I usually steer clear of the harder difficulties, but MW2 was also the first game I decided was my goal to get 1000/1000 gamerscore (which I havent done yet)

I usually play mid-level when there's three choices (Bioshock series) and one less then Veteren when there's four choices (COD Series). I usually go back and play through on easy to get the task based achievements and will chip away on Veteren/Hard for more achievements but my patience can run thin at some points.

I usually play on normal or easy for the first pass so I can soak up the story as opposed to getting my butt kicked. Then if the story is good enough, I'll go back and play it in a harder mode.

I usually do normal. I'm not good enough or have the patience enough to tackle hard modes.
