We recorded this one early in the week, right after the press conferences. But after recording nearly four hours of audio over two nights, it still took me until now to get the thing edited and published.
Just an fyi, Gears of War Judgement is slated for release next year, not this year.
A couple things I thought of.
1) EA's online plans. Great that you can connect to your game outside of the game, except that EA has a pretty bad history of turning off access to their games relatively quickly, sports (sports sports sports) games in particular. Is this really a compelling feature when it's known to be for a "limited time only"?
2) In regards to Sony All-Stars being a Smash Bros. clone, Bantha made the comment that if Microsoft had enough characters, they'd make one, too. I think this speaks to the concern that Microsoft does not have a lot of original in-house IP, especially compared to Sony and Nintendo, if we can't think of enough Microsoft-owned icons that could make such a game.
I'm only half-way through the podcast so far but wanted to chime in.
One of the thoughts I had so far is that I'm kind of worried about the next console. I can't think of what kind of interesting gamer related features that it could have that doesn't relate to Kinect or Smart Glass. There's also the part about how MS never really gets it right the first time AND they always make the big announcement too far ahead of time; I have low confidence in Smart Glass really being a factor for the first go around.
The examples that were talked about with Smart Glass in the press release for Watch Dogs was all about collaborative gaming with folks -in your house-. How many of you are trying to fill the side by side co-op niche in your life? That's right; none of the core market, only the casual market.
I get the feeling that Smart Glass is really about the home media play and the gaming stuff is add on. Copying a movie to your tablet will take a while but at least you -can- in a sanctioned way. Pop up video is fun. The alternate ending / scene idea to integrate DVD extras is awesome. That this could also be building a platform for interactive entertainment is also pretty sweet.
My prediction is that the next Xbox is a home media center first and foremost (including a DVR) that also plays games. I figure that the software model on the 360 allows OS upgrades and makes most features software driven. The only reason now to rev the hardware is to add more power, memory, disc formats, etc.
ps, Knight, you might want to choke up on the mic a little bit. You're really hard to hear compared to everybody else.
"my provisions of offensive ordnance need refreshment, old chap!"
Yeah, I missed that step this time around. Since my computer started recording my voice about a second and a half off of the rest of the cast, I sprung for the "professional" version of PowerGramo, which records my voice in its own channel -- so I can time-shift it and adjust the audio levels appropriately.
I just blame Bantha for talking so loud.![]()
No, my comment was in response to (I think if was Jeeps, but can't be sure) who said that if Xbox finds a successful title, they release one every year. Gears is a banner game, and there will be no Gears game in '12. I like that they are sticking with a every other year release, but I'm a Gear Head and will buy the games until they ruin the franchise. That hasn't happened...yet. And I think the release will be summer and not spring, but it's really too early to tell.
