    Classic Gaming

So, I'm thinking about collecting some of the older consoles and some good games. I figured with consoles rapidly changing some of the good ole' fashion games are going to start to disappear. I know this isn't going to be a rush hurry up and collect, but more of a slowly take my time and find them. This is where I need some input what console should I start with? the NES which I started on or just start with the SNES or Gamecube. What games should be required to have in a collection. I even thought about just getting a modded xbox that has the preloaded ROMs on there, but that seemed like cheating.

    I have a question...

Do you want the authentic experience, meaning the original hardware/controllers, or just the games?

If you want all original hardware/games...I would maybe start with SNES or N64. They will be more available and maybe in better working condition. Then maybe move to the Playstation One.

These three consoles should cover tons of awesome games.

I still have a Dreamcast and Sega Genesis with games and they both still work. Although last I checked, the Genesis controllers seemed to always be crappy and glitchy.

I don't know what kind of vintage game stores are near you...but I would look into something like that...instead of the Wild West of Ebay. Maybe Craigslist too.

These are the stores near me that have a tons of classic consoles for sale with some type of guarantee on the hardware. (Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, Playstation, Genesis, etc.)

I actually acquired 2 atari 2600 in working order a while back. Having played it as a child, I thought what a nostalgic moment this would be. It wasn't. I have 17 games for it and they are all painful to play. Fortunately I got the whole thing as a steal from an estate sale for $25. So lucky me. But I can tell you that from my perspective there is little joy in looking back at those old games. It was neat for a few minutes. And it is a nice collectible piece but overall I think you'll tire quickly of most of the games on the older platforms. I know the Atari is a rough benchmark but we've all become accustomed to controllers with a dozen plus buttons.

If you just want the games then I'd say ROMS are the way to go.

Dont get me wrong I thought about the ROMs on a mod'ed xbox, but I dont have access to that, and I like the old consoles. I managed to find a N64 with mario64 with it, but it was a toss up which one I was going to get that or the SNES. I played the SNES till the buttons fell off. I really didn't play the N64 that much if at all. I went from NES,SNES to sony PSone

At least for NES and SNES, you can get an emulator and ROMS (Google search) to try which games you would want to buy.

I don't know if there are emulators for PSOne games yet.

I'm still really wanting to pick up a 3DS...one of my fears is they will just have another DS around the corner. To date they have had the DS, DS lite, DS XLi, 3DS
