I never gave the Codex books a shot. I think it was because I had Butcher pidgeon-holed as a urban fantasy author, and I wasn't sure how he'd translate in my mind to the purely fantasy side of things. He's SO good with the urban stuff! But after reading the comments, I might dl the first Codex book onto my kindle and try it out

Not sure if its a viable cost cutting option, but if you dont want to plunge in and buy these titles, you could check them out at your local library to try them out

My wife and I use our library a lot these days. Having a good website which allows us to place requests for books and DVDs and even e-books has allowed us to try out dozens of different series and writers. As mentioned in another thread on here, we track them all on www.fictfact.com and we've managed to find a lot of new books and series to follow through the library and by fictfact recommendations

As for Twisted's comments - they did try the Dresden Files on SyFy (not sure if you were aware of that). Sadly, they missed the mark pretty badly IMO. It's too bad, as if HBO had gotten ahold of it and given it the love and attention something like Game of Thrones got, I bet it would be a surefire winner. I bet even SyFy could do a much better job if they ever tried to revisit the idea of bring Harry Dresden to TV.

I don't know. Watch a few dozen SyFy channel movies and you would never allow then to take on a series you wrote. In many cases I think I could do just as good at CGI.

As for HBO I did not read a lot of the dresden files yet, I started with Codex and then saw a few of the dresden file on SyFy. I can not see the show as a soft porn substitute like they did Game of Thrones. I honestly have never really watched HBO series, my bills are high enough, so I downloaded a torrent of the first episode of Game of Thrones and was shocked! I'm no goodie-to-shoes and can't say I did not like it, but sure as heck did not expect it, and glad I was watching it on my laptop and did not send it to the TV while my daughters were here.

    What's Urban Fantasy?

The Furies of Calderon was a good book. It starts a little slow but it's totally worth it. I haven't read more of them yet but definitely intend to.

Based on context, I would guess that urban fantasy is fantasy stuff set in modern day cities, rather than Forgotten Realms type worlds. The Dresden series takes place primarily in modern day Chicago.
You dumb bastard. It's not a schooner, it's a sailboat.

@F1at1ined: I live in a tiny, tiny town lol I don't think ebooks from the library are an option yet, here, though I would love it if they were. And unless it a very popular mainstream author, the library doesn't generally carry the books that I'm interested. No Jim Butcher. LOTS of romances and westerns in our library. Yay for midwestern towns. I will take a look at the fictfact site you mentioned, though. Thanks!

I started the first Iron Druid book, Hounded, and, so far, I'm liking it

And, yep, the Atticus/Oberon interactions are pretty amusing lol

I thought I spoke up on this earlier but I guess I didn't. I love the series so far and can't wait for the next one. From the preview, sample, or book description (can't remember which) of book five it sounds really good.
