What the heck is up with all of this stuff on Facebook?

"Here's a picture of a dog. Click Like if you know what this is!"

"Here's a pair of pants. Click like if you remember wearing these as a kid!"

"Say 'Mother May I' and then spell 'cup.' Share once you get the joke!"

Why? And why do people actually do it? I mean, no offense if you like this stuff and share this stuff, just wondering.
