NYC-bound - Sept 25 to Oct 2

so, i got 8 days away from the office to spend in NYC. i've been there once before but was working for most of it. My wife is not coming as she's leaving for Europe with her grandmother right after I leave. so...I have a camera, 80gb worth of SD cards, a good friend's pad to crash in, and pretty much nothing else on the agenda.

my interests are craft beer, photography, craft beer, the ocean/rivers/bays, craft beer, architecture, craft beer, hole in the wall amazing restaurants, and craft beer.

oh...and baseball. and craft beer.

any locals got recommendations for this lifelong chicagoan to see? btw, i grew up with a chip on my shoulder about NYC with all the second city talk about my town. then i went to NYC. it's no contest. while i live in an amazing city, it's like comparing apples and ferraris.

Don't take your tripod with you to NYC. There's weird stuff goings on with the local police and tripods in NYC.

My favorite hole in the wall I've discovered is Levain bakery on 74th a couple of blocks west of Central Park. Phenomenal cookies. If you take the train to 72nd and Central Park West, you'll find The Dakota, the most exclusive apartment building in NYC, and a nice piece of architecture. It's also where John Lennon was shot.



Get out to Long Island and ask for some "Grandma" pizza. Love it.

Head down to 53rd, or so, I think, and 5th avenue, and St. Patricks Cathedral is the most amazing piece of architecture I've ever seen. I could spend hours taking pictures in there. Right across the street is Rockefeller Plaza, which is cool, too.



At 59th and 5th, I think (right at the southeast corner of Central Park) is the Plaza Hotel, famous for Home Alone 2.



Central Park is beautiful and amazing. There's a big, open lawn area where you have a fantastic view of the park with the tall buildings of the city behind it.

can anyone tell me about public transportation out to long island from queens? my mother in law grew up on LI and i want to surprise her with some pics of the home in which she grew up.

How far out? The MTA subways go out about as far as JFK and Jamaica. You can catch the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) from out in Jamaica, or even at Penn Station, which will take you all the way out to Montauk, if you want. There might also be buses, but I've never used buses up there.

i brought my tripod...and had it promptly stolen in Battery Park. turned my back in a pretty non-busy section...for all of 30 seconds. gone.

That's one thing I really don't like about NYC. It's a crying shame.

The police also don't like tripods w/out permits post 9/11.

It's also the building used in the exterior shots for Rosemary's Baby.
